Mission, Vision, Goals

Mission Statement:

The mission of the 3D Security Initiative is to promote conflict prevention and peacebuilding investments and strategies in US policymaking. We will do this by fostering greater recognition within the US government of international and local civil society perspectives on conflict prevention, principled negotiation, and sustainable development in security policymaking.

Vision Statement:

The vision of the 3D Security Initiative is to build reliance upon the “first resort” strategies of development and diplomacy so as to prevent the “last resort” strategies of US military action. We will do this by demonstrating the way U.S. interests in security, good governance and democracy are built from the ground up by civil society groups working at conflict prevention. In the next five years, the U.S. will rely more on conflict prevention strategies and will have created institutional mechanisms within the US government for supporting and including international and local civil society perspectives on conflict prevention, principled negotiation, and sustainable development in security policymaking.

Goals:

1. To foster understanding of the foundational roles of civil society in conflict prevention, good governance, democratization, stabilization and reconstruction and create structured mechanisms for local civil society groups working at conflict prevention to interface with the US government and military working in their region.

2. To increase understanding of the links between poverty, economic disparity, good governance, development and conflict prevention and in turn to increase Congressional appropriations for conflict prevention programming by civilian agencies

3. To promote principled negotiation and conflict prevention policy options in US policy
