Afghanistan and Pakistan: US Policy & Peacebuilding
3D Director Lisa Schirch traveled to Pakistan in late April 2011 to visit Pakistani colleagues working in peacebuilding organizations. Returning just days before US-Pakistan relations became even more complicated by
the killing of Osama bin Laden, Schirch's interviews detail the gaps between Pakistan and US policy.
Compared to other countries of equal economic standing, Afghan and
Pakistani civil society peacebuilding efforts are robust.
A wide range of individuals and organizations are working to build
bridges across social divides, to teach people peaceful ways of
addressing conflicts, to promote rule of law and participatory
governance, and to create democratic decision-making forums for
addressing the root causes of conflicts.
3D Security Initiative is partnering with Kabul University and the
Afghanistan: Pathways to Peace (P2P) project, highlighted in the first
two videos above, to build a platform for a more sustained,
comprehensive public peace process.
3D's policy briefs on Afghanistan and Pakistan are 2 page, concise
overviews of the key topics in these areas. AFGHANISTAN
Voice of America Afghanistan programs in Dari and Pashto languages
interviewed 3D director Lisa Schirch on her recent visit to Kabul,
Afghanistan and the perspectives on US strategy she heard from diverse
civil society leaders.
During her December 2009 visit to Afghanistan, 3D Director Lisa Schirch
filmed 11 videos highlighting these efforts. The videos, while not
comprehensive of all peacebuilding efforts, provide a glimpse of civil
society's perspectives and efforts for
peace. In these videos, she asked Afghan civil society leaders to
describe their work and organizations.
Pakistani civil society efforts are critical to addressing the security
and humanitarian challenges in the region.
